1 Oral sedation

 

 

This is when the patient takes a drug like Valium orally.

 

Pre medication

 

Sometimes we will give oral sedation as a ‘premed’ to very anxious patients who are not able to come to the dentist without sedation.

 

Oral sedation for dental treatment

 

•   Oral sedation will relax the patient and make them sleepy.

•   It does not relieve pain and the effects is very long lasting.

•   In our experience  most patients referred to Chartwell will require more than oral sedation alone for their dental treatment.

•   Intravenous administration of a smaller dose of a drug similar to valium can achieve the same effect, and the patient will leave Chartwell more alert because they have had a smaller dose intravenously.

•   We do not routinely give patients oral sedation alone because dental treatment usually requires deeper sedation and then it makes the administration of the alternative treatments more complicated.
