Principals of sedation in the dental chair.

The process of Conscious sedation as defined by the General Dental Council is :-

a technique in which the use of a drug or drugs produces a state of depression of the central nervous system enabling treatment to be carried out, but during which verbal contact with the patient is maintained throughout the period of sedation. The drugs and techniques used to provide conscious sedation for dental treatment should carry a margin of safety wide enough to render loss of consciousness unlikely

Chartwell accepts this definition of Conscious Sedation and the General Dental Council and the Royal College of Anaesthetists’s  guidance to use the Minimum Sedation necessary. They recommend that sedation must be

‘limited to the amount require to achieve patient co-operation’.

Sedation is not a general anaesthetic.   Patients sometimes express a wish to be ‘completely asleep’ or to 'remember nothing’ during their treatment. While the drugs used at Chartwell  are very powerful sedatives, analgesics and also induce amnesia, we cannot guarantee that you will remember nothing of your treatment, but most patients will remember that they felt completely comfortable during their sedation.

Your dentist has referred you for treatment under sedation.  If you do not want  sedation or do not need to be treated under sedation, then please return to your dentist for treatment/further discussion as to the possibility of treatment without sedation.

Chartwell was founded around the intravenous and inhalation service we offered to dentists for the treatment of patients who find dental treatment too frightening. We specialise in the advanced technique of ‘low dose sevoflurane inhalation sedation’. This is particularly suitable for needle phobic patients and children who have a fear of injections.

There are different routes for sedation drugs to be administered.

1      Oral Sedation

2      Inhalation Sedation

3      Intravenous sedation
