Chartwell had its beginnings by providing a service to the local community in Hertfordshire, for anxious patients requiring dental treatment under anaesthesia and sedation.
Chartwell is a partnership between Dentistry and sedation
Dr Jeff Zane is the partner and the anaesthetist leading the Sedation Team
Dr Arlene Theron is the partner and the Principal Dentist leading the Dental Team
Jeff is the original founder of Chartwell and leads the anaesthetic team at Chartwell. Jeff gave up his appointment as locum consultant anaesthetist at Watford General Hospital to specialise in the field of Dental Anaesthesia.
He has been working at Chartwell since 1976, providing dental treatment for patients requiring general anaesthesia in the dental practice that grew into Chartwell Dental Clinic.
During this period over 35,000 patients were treated under general anaesthesia, without a single mishap. The quality of our service attracted the attention of Hertfordshire Health Authority and we were the first Sedation Clinic to in the country to receive a contract from the PCT for the treatment of patients requiring surgical extractions under general anaesthesia.
From 1998 Jeff has been involved in the treatment of patients under sedation. He specialises in the sedation of children in the dental chair (EPLS trained). Chartwell receives referrals for over 3,000 dental phobic and needle patients per year for sedation in the dental chair. and Jeff has refined the new technique of Low Dose Sevoflurane Inhalation Sedation for dental sedation particularly for children.
In addition to this he has pioneered a number of new Intravenous Sedation techniques. Jeff Zane works in close cooperation with a team, including Arlene Theron plus Great Ormond Street and Harefield trained nurses, that now specialises in the treatment of children and needle phobic patients, for whom these sedation techniques are particularly suitable.

Arlene Theron
It is widely acknowledged that South Africa trains excellent dentists. Arlene ranks as one of the best.
Born and raised in South Africa, Arlene studied dentistry at the University of Pretoria, and qualified in 1990. She had a large private practice and gained enormous experience in oral surgery and general dentistry. Arlene gained further experience working as a dentist in the South African Defence Force before relocating to the UK in 2001.
She became the Principal Dentist at Chartwell in 2003 and soon gained a reputation for providing superior quality dental treatment in a caring and gentle manner.
She is particularly good with children as well as having a special interest in cosmetic
treatments, endodontics and Sedation. She has trained in Implant Dentistry and now
coordinates, plans and restores all the implant cases working closely with the Maxillo-
She has many years of experience in treating patients under sedation. At Chartwell
she treats about 2,000 patients per year and has been working closely with the anaesthetist,

Outside work she is a committed mum of two daughters and she enjoys spending time with her family in the outdoors.
